BLACKSOD ANGLING 2003
Over forty anglers took part in the Belmullet Sea Angling clubs Blacksod Bay Teach John Joes and Dawn Dairies sponsored one day Connacht Closed Gold medal and Pat O’Hara in windy conditions. The Junior competition was held on the Saturday with over thirty juniors taking part. There were anglers from England, Scotland and northern Ireland competing as well as a large turnout from Connacht Club anglers. There were two specimen boated and 18 different species of fish landed, which included cod and Pollack up to 11 pounds and some amounts of haddock up to 2 pounds. Belmullet SAC managed to take the first five places in the competition , this means they will be representing Connacht in the Inter Provinces next year, the five team, members are Tony Lally, Sylvy Sweeney, James Munnelly, Kevin Walsh and David Deane, Tony Lally, will be on the Irish team to fish the home International next year in Scotland.
Results 1st, Tony Lally, 12 various, 2nd, Sylvy Sweeney, 11 varieties, James Mangan, 10 varieties. Best Lady Angler, Laura Meenaghan, Best Junior Anger, Ian Cafferkey.

7th, Open Boat Angling Competition

Fifty anglers took part in Dawn Dairies/Reilly’s Pub, Drum sponsored competition, fished on Blacksod Bay with a large contingent of young anglers.

There were 19 different species of fish caught including: Megrim, Plaice, Dab, Homlyn Ray, Turbot and Pollack, up to 9lbs. weight boated by young angler, Declan Cawley of Blacksod, using his local knowledge of the area to boat the “Big Ones”.

Winner of the day with seven varieties was Shane Gilvarry (Newport SAC). Runner up with six varieties was James Mangan (Belmullet SAC). Best Lady was Mary McGinty.

Best Junior was Adrian Lally — a young man to be watched in the future — winning his second major competition — following his victory in the junior two-day event in June.

1st greatest variety: Plaque and £200 went Shane Gilvarry; 2nd greatest variety: Prize and £100, James Mangan; 3rd greatest variety: Prize and £60, Pat Ruddy; 4th greatest variety: Prize and £25, Padraic Calpin; 5th, greatest variety: Prize and £25, Hughie Carolan.

Ladies Section; 1st, greatest variety: valuable prize, Mary McGinty; 2nd, greatest variety; valuable prize: Mary Lavelle.

Local Section: 1st. greatest variety: valuable prizes, Michael Dunleavy; 2nd, greatest variety: valuable prixes, Tony Lally.

Junior Section: 1st, greatest variety: plaque and replica, Adrian Lally; 2nd, greatest variety: trophy, Declan Cawley; 3rd greatest variety: trophy, Michael Dunleavy; 4th, greatest variety: trophy, John Cawley.

Blacksod Sea Angling

At the last club outing of this year, a total of eighteen anglers fished from three boats in unfavourable weather conditions but they still managed to catch a total of eighteen varieties. The winner on the day was Tony Lally, with a total of ten varieties. In second place was Michael Dunleavy, with a total of nine varieties.

Pat Ruddy caught a 14lb Ling, which was the heaviest fish of the day. This was the club’s final outing for the year and the decider of the Master Angler for the year 1999/2000. The winner was Michael Dunleavy, who was wished the best in representing Belmullet Sea Angling Club in the National Master Angling Competition in 2000. Sylvy Sweeney was also congratulated on finishing in third place in the Master Angling Competition,1998/1999, that was fished in Rathmullen, and he was wished the best when he fishes on the Irish team in the World Championship in Italy next year.

15th Blacksod, 2-Day International Open-Boat Competition, held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June, ’99. 1st, greatest variety over 2 days and winner of £200, sponsored by Concannon Marketing, Claremorris went to Alan Smallwood, Topknots S.A.C., 13 species. 2nd , best local James Mangan, Belmullet S.A.C. 10 species. 1st, on Saturday — James Mangan, Belmullet S.A.C. 7 species. 1st on Sunday, Alan Smallwood 7 species. Best Lady, Mary McGinty, Belmullet S.A.C. Best Junior, Michael Dunleavy,

Belmullet S.A.C. Over 140 Anglers participated in very windy fishing conditions, with a large contingent of Northern and English Anglers. Total number of species boated was 19 with ling. up to 13 pounds weight caught, Alan Smallwood Topknots S.A.C. came out tops with a very respectable 13 species of fish, considering the rough sea conditions, 2nd overall and first on Saturday and best local was James Mangan, Belmullet S.A.C. with 10 species of fish. The Prizegiving Function took place in the Curragh Lounge, Elly Bay where the Chairman, David Deane thanked the Main Sponsors, Concannon Marketing, Claremorris (Seamus Murray) and Bank of Ireland, the square Belmullet and all the other sponsors for their contribution towards the competition. The chairman also thanked the boatman, Anglers and fellow officers for their help throughout the busy weekend. Next open Boat Competition is the Dawn Dairies and Reilly’s Pub, Drum, competition to be fished on Blacksod Bay on Sunday, July 4th. All entries to competition secretary, Tony Lally at 097/81378.
